How did you feel about the summer school program? How was the learning experience in the U.S. different from Japan?
- “It was really great to learn things that local students are taught. There were many activities, and I was able to actively communicate with others. I felt that education in the U.S. focuses more on practical experience. In this camp, after learning the basics, we each created something on our own.” (W, 8th grade)
What are your thoughts on classes taught in English?
- “By actually experiencing it, I realized once again that speaking English is just a means to an end. In Japan, we don’t have many opportunities to speak in English, so it was a good learning experience.” (H.L.)
- “There were times when I didn’t understand everything, but the teachers explained things clearly, so I didn’t have any major problems.” (T.L.)
How was your interaction with people in the dorm and at summer school?
- “In the first week, I was mostly focused on getting used to things, so I didn’t interact much. But in the second week, I was able to make friends and also got to know the instructors better.” (H, 11th grade)
- “Through pair work and group work, I became good friends with my classmates at camp. In the second week, I deepened my interaction with my roommate—we exchanged contact information, played games together, and did various activities.” (S.G.)
- “After two weeks, my understanding of English improved drastically, and I was able to comprehend almost everything. I felt that I had grown a lot.” (Y, 8th grade)
What did you learn or gain from this experience?
- “I decided that I want to pursue university education abroad. Besides what I learned in class, I realized how important it is to try communicating in another language.” (K.M.)
- “I learned how to adapt to different places and customs. I also understood that it’s normal to face challenges. In a camp where people from various countries gathered, I felt the importance of sharing and appreciating each other’s cultural differences.” (W.R.)
